Where should you be technically and what pieces should you be playing?

This question is asked a lot. The truth is that every individual progresses at their own pace.  Below you can find a guide of what technique (scales arpeggios etc...) and repertoire (pieces - solos) that you should be working on after each year of playing.  This is a very rough guide that can help you align to different music testing programs.   Will what's required for a testing program be exactly what I've listed? No.  These are only examples of what you might expect.

There is more to playing an instrument than playing scales and performing pieces.  You should also be working on your music theory knowledge as you progress.  If you are interested in learning and improving your music theory knowledge, consider purchasing a workbook from www.4sranchschoofmusic.org
