What does that mean?
I strongly believe in the 5 Ds. The first of which is "Desire". I want students to "desire" to play, to "desire" to practice. I do this by letting them pick the music they wish to play and letting them decide how long to practice based on those desires. For example, I will often give students a choice...three pieces. If they chose the first one it will take 30 minutes of practice every other day, the second piece will require 30 minutes of practice everyday, and the third will take 45 minutes everyday. Each choice and practice requirement is individually designed for the specific student. Some students will never need to be given a choice...the will exceed my expectations. This is what I refer to as limitless expectations. They will chose a piece that I would never have chosen for them and they will succeed. A piece that would require more practice than I thought they would ever do.
I usually ask students several times a year what their goals are in regards to our lessons. Goals change for students and then I can tailor my approach to what they need. I recognize that not all of my students are going to be professional musicians. But, I have to give all my students the tools and background that a student on track to be a professional would get in a way that brings my students joy. I don't force students to do anything. They have to make a choice. For example: If you are serious this is what you need to do...if you aren't willing to do that, then we need to reassess your goals.

How will I see this in practice?
All my students have the same opportunities. Since my teaching is centered around the student all students regardless of ability are encouraged to play in recitals, competitions, concerts and festivals. All students are told about EVERY event and they and their parents pick and chose.
Recitals are all-inclusive from beginners to advanced performers. There is no charge for recitals other than any fees that are attached to the pianist and rehearsals with the pianist.
Masterclasses given by myself or in conjunction with another 4S Ranch School of Music teacher are also free. If we hire someone out of the school then a small fee might be applied.
